Bad credit can limit your choices, but approval alone does not make a loan worthwhile. Our picks emphasize realistic borrower access, soft-pull rate checking, transparent costs and useful flexibility, while the guide below shows how to judge APRs, fees, secured or joint options and the payment you can actually afford.

Bad credit changes the offers you should accept, not just the lenders you can try

A lower credit score can narrow your personal-loan options, but approval is only one part of the decision. The more important question is whether the loan you can actually get is affordable enough to solve the problem that caused you to borrow. A lender may accept a wider range of applicants and still offer you a rate near the top of its range, deduct a substantial origination fee, or approve a payment that leaves too little room in your monthly budget.

That is why our bad-credit ranking puts more weight on access and offer quality together. We favor lenders that let borrowers check likely terms before a full application, disclose their ranges clearly, and provide useful paths such as a co-borrower or secured loan when those options can improve approval odds or pricing. We also penalize restrictive fees, high minimum amounts and qualification rules that make a lender less useful for the borrowers this page is meant to help.

Do not treat any public credit-score threshold as a promise. Achieve, for example, publishes a 560 minimum score for its personal loan, but it also makes clear that meeting the minimum does not guarantee approval. Other lenders do not publish a hard minimum at all because they consider credit history alongside income, debt obligations and other underwriting factors. A score can help you screen the market, but the offer in front of you matters more than a category label.

If you have bad credit, the best shopping strategy is usually to gather several soft-pull estimates, compare the real APR and fee on similar terms, and borrow only when the payment works without depending on another loan to cover the next shortfall. Access to credit has value. Expensive access that deepens an existing cash-flow problem does not.

Your credit score is one signal, not the entire underwriting decision

Credit scores summarize information from your credit reports, but lenders are allowed to consider much more than the score itself. Income, existing monthly debt, recent delinquencies, length and type of credit history, cash flow, employment information and the amount you want to borrow can all influence approval and pricing. Two applicants with the same score can therefore receive very different decisions.

This matters because the phrase bad credit is not a universal underwriting standard. Publishers often use score bands to organize educational content, but lenders build their own models and may use different credit bureaus, scoring versions or non-score information. A borrower with a thin file and few missed payments presents a different risk profile from someone with the same score after recent defaults. Likewise, a borrower with stable income and low current debt may look different from someone whose monthly obligations already consume most available income.

Use your score to set realistic expectations, not to predict a guaranteed rate. If you know your reports contain errors, dispute them before applying rather than assuming a low score must be accepted as final. If the negative information is accurate, focus on the parts of the application you can strengthen, including lowering requested loan size, reducing other balances where possible, documenting stable income and considering a qualified co-borrower or collateral only when the risk is acceptable.

A lender that considers more variables can create opportunities for borrowers who do not fit a traditional prime-credit profile, which is part of why Upstart leads our list. But broader underwriting does not mean automatic approval or low pricing. The lender still has to determine that the loan can be repaid, and the final APR can remain high when the application presents significant credit risk.

Use soft-pull rate checks to narrow the field before you fully apply

When your credit is already under pressure, there is little reason to trigger full applications everywhere simply to discover which lender might work. Several lenders on our list let you check loan options or prequalify using a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score. That creates a better shopping process because you can compare likely terms before choosing where to proceed.

Keep the request consistent across lenders. If you need $8,000, do not compare one lender's $8,000 three-year estimate with another lender's $15,000 five-year estimate. The larger amount and longer term can distort both the monthly payment and APR. Ask for the amount you actually need and compare the same or similar repayment period wherever possible.

Record more than the APR. Note the origination fee, monthly payment, amount you would actually receive after any fee deduction, repayment term and any condition attached to the offer. A lender may show a lower APR but deduct enough from the proceeds that you have to borrow more to cover the original expense. Another may offer a slightly higher APR with a lower fee and smaller total repayment.

A soft-pull estimate is not final approval. Moving forward generally involves verification and a hard inquiry, and the final terms can change if the lender finds information that differs from the initial application. The purpose of prequalification is not to lock in a promise. It is to avoid unnecessary full applications and give yourself a realistic comparison set before committing.

At weaker credit, APR and origination fees can dominate the decision

Borrowers with lower credit scores are more likely to receive pricing near the upper end of a lender's range, so cost discipline matters more, not less. A personal loan with an APR around 30% can still be useful in a narrow situation, such as replacing even more expensive debt or covering an unavoidable expense that has no cheaper financing path. But high-cost installment debt should not be treated as ordinary spending money.

Origination fees deserve special attention because many bad-credit-friendly lenders charge them. If a $10,000 loan carries an 8% origination fee deducted from proceeds, only $9,200 may reach you even though repayment is based on the full loan amount. If you actually need $10,000 in cash, you would need a larger approved loan, which increases both principal and interest cost.

The CFPB recommends reviewing loan disclosures for fees and comparing offers from multiple lenders. That advice becomes particularly important here because two products with similar advertised APR ranges can produce very different actual costs once your personalized rate and fee are known. Upstart can charge an origination fee when a lending partner's offer includes one. Avant, Achieve and LendingPoint also disclose possible origination or administration fees, while OneMain's fee structure varies by state.

Before accepting an offer, calculate the total of payments and the amount that will actually be deposited. If the fee is financed or deducted, make sure you understand which number your monthly payment is based on. A loan that solves today's cash need but removes ten percent of the proceeds before funding can be much less useful than the headline loan amount suggests.

A co-borrower or secured loan can improve access, but it also adds risk

Borrowers with damaged credit sometimes improve their options by applying jointly with someone who has stronger income or credit, or by pledging collateral for a secured loan. Those strategies can make approval easier or improve pricing, but neither is a free upgrade.

A joint personal loan makes both borrowers responsible for repayment. If the loan goes unpaid, both credit files can be affected and the lender can pursue the parties according to the agreement. The arrangement therefore works best when both people understand the purpose of the debt, can see the payment plan and are comfortable sharing full responsibility. OneMain supports joint applications, and Achieve offers a potential co-borrower pricing benefit for qualified borrowers.

Secured borrowing changes the risk even more directly because an asset can be at stake. OneMain offers both secured and unsecured personal loans and notes that larger amounts can require a first lien on an eligible vehicle. A secured offer may be easier to qualify for or cheaper than an unsecured alternative, but a payment problem can now threaten the collateral as well as your credit.

Do not pledge a vehicle or involve another borrower just to turn a weak loan into an approval. Compare the secured or joint offer with the best unsecured option you can get and ask whether the improvement in APR or payment is large enough to justify the new risk. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the safer decision is to borrow less, delay the expense or use a different form of assistance.

Borrowing less can matter more than finding a slightly lower rate

When credit is weak, the most effective way to reduce loan cost may be to reduce the amount borrowed. A lender offering $20,000 does not make $20,000 the right target. Every additional dollar increases the principal on which interest is charged, and high APRs magnify that effect over a multi-year term.

Separate essential borrowing from optional borrowing before you check rates. If a car repair is necessary to keep working, price the repair accurately and borrow around that need. Do not automatically add several thousand dollars for discretionary purchases simply because the lender approves a larger amount. The extra cash can make the application look successful while making the repayment plan much harder.

Loan minimums also matter. Achieve starts at $5,000, which can make it a poor fit for a borrower who needs only $1,500 or $2,000 even though its published credit threshold is relatively accessible. Upstart and LendingPoint start much lower in most states, and OneMain begins at $1,500 in many locations. Minimums vary by state for several lenders, so confirm the actual amount available where you live.

A smaller request can also improve affordability and may improve the chance that the payment fits the lender's debt-to-income assessment. There is no guarantee that asking for less produces approval, but it aligns the borrowing decision with the underlying expense and reduces the cost if the loan is made.

Fast funding is useful only after the loan passes the affordability test

Bad-credit borrowers are frequently targeted with urgency-driven marketing because financial stress makes speed feel like the first priority. A legitimate lender that can fund quickly can be valuable, especially for a necessary repair, medical expense or another time-sensitive bill. But speed should break a tie between acceptable loans, not justify an unaffordable one.

Avant says approved funds may arrive as soon as the next business day. LendingPoint says funds are often sent by ACH the next non-holiday business day after final underwriting approval. OneMain advertises funding as soon as one hour after closing in some situations, while Upstart describes a fast online process and says many completed applications receive automated decisions.

Those timelines are useful only after you have compared the actual terms. Waiting one extra business day for a materially cheaper loan can be worthwhile. Likewise, a fast loan with a 35% APR and large fee may solve an immediate bill while creating several years of difficult payments.

If the expense cannot wait long enough to shop even a few soft-pull offers, ask the service provider whether it has a payment plan, hardship program or lower-cost financing option. A mechanic, hospital, utility or creditor may offer a structure that is cheaper than a high-cost personal loan. Urgency narrows your choices, but it should not eliminate the cost comparison entirely.

Bad-credit borrowers should be especially skeptical of guaranteed approval

The search for a loan with weak credit attracts both legitimate lenders and scams. The Federal Trade Commission warns about advance-fee loan schemes that promise credit regardless of your history and then demand money before the loan exists. A request to send money for insurance, processing or a guaranteed approval before funding is a major warning sign.

Legitimate lenders can charge disclosed loan fees, including origination charges, but those costs belong in the loan agreement and are not the same as paying a stranger upfront for the promise of approval. Be cautious with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly, guarantees a loan before reviewing your information, pressures you to act immediately, or asks for payment by gift card, wire transfer or another hard-to-reverse method.

Verify the lender's identity and use the provider's official website rather than a link from an unsolicited text or email. Check whether the lender is authorized to operate in your state, read the disclosures before entering sensitive information and confirm that the website domain is correct. Bad credit does not require accepting opaque or unlicensed financing.

Also distinguish a loan from debt settlement or credit-repair marketing. A company may collect your information by advertising a loan and then steer you toward a different service. If you asked for an installment loan, make sure the agreement you are considering is actually a loan with a principal amount, APR, payment schedule and lender, not a debt-relief contract with a different set of risks and fees.

Why these five lenders represent different paths for weaker credit

Upstart takes our top spot because its marketplace is explicitly built to evaluate more than a conventional credit score, and it offers a soft initial rate check with a wide borrowing range. That can make it a useful first screen for someone whose score alone does not tell the full story. Its main weaknesses are the possible origination fee and a relatively limited set of standard repayment terms.

OneMain ranks second because it provides options that many purely online unsecured lenders do not. Borrowers may be able to apply jointly, consider secured or unsecured structures and get help through a large branch network. Those features can improve practical access, but secured borrowing adds collateral risk and OneMain's starting APR is higher than some competitors.

Avant is a strong fit when the priority is a straightforward unsecured loan and potentially fast funding. Its public range is $2,000 to $35,000 with terms from two to five years, and checking loan options uses a soft inquiry. The possible administration fee and high upper APR remain important drawbacks.

Achieve earns a place because it publishes a 560 minimum credit score, supports a qualified co-borrower path and allows soft prequalification. The $5,000 minimum loan size makes it less flexible for small expenses, and its origination fee can be substantial. LendingPoint rounds out the list with a broad online range, soft rate checking and potentially next-business-day funding. It requires at least $35,000 in annual income and does not offer joint or cosigned loans, which limits its usefulness for some applicants.

If the offer is too expensive, the right answer may be not to borrow

A personal loan is not automatically the best solution just because approval is possible. If every offer arrives near the top of the lender's APR range, compare the cost with alternatives before accepting. For a purchase that can wait, saving for several months may be cheaper than financing. For a bill that is already owed, the creditor may have a hardship plan or installment arrangement.

A local credit union or community bank can also be worth checking, particularly if you already have a relationship there. Some credit unions offer smaller-dollar products or manually underwritten loans that are not visible on national comparison lists. Federal credit unions may also offer payday alternative loans within regulatory limits for eligible members, which can be very different from high-cost payday lending.

If the need is debt-related and monthly obligations are already unmanageable, nonprofit credit counseling may be more useful than adding another payment. A counselor can help review the budget and existing debts and may discuss a debt management plan where appropriate. That is different from a conventional personal loan and different again from debt settlement.

For a true emergency, also consider whether family assistance, an employer advance, an insurance claim, a medical payment plan or a secured low-cost option can solve the immediate need without locking in a multi-year high-rate obligation. The purpose of shopping for a bad-credit loan is to find the least damaging workable financing, not to prove that borrowing is always possible.

A loan can support credit rebuilding only if the payment remains manageable

Taking out a personal loan does not repair bad credit by itself. The new account creates another obligation, and missed payments can make the credit problem worse. What may help over time is a record of on-time repayment combined with lower revolving balances, fewer new applications and stable use of existing credit.

Before accepting the loan, test the payment against a realistic month rather than an ideal one. Include housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, minimum debt payments and a small allowance for irregular expenses. If the loan payment works only when nothing unexpected happens, the budget is too fragile.

Once the loan is active, use automatic payments only if the linked account reliably has enough money on the due date. An AutoPay discount can be valuable, but an overdraft or returned payment can create additional fees. Calendar reminders and a separate payment buffer can be more important than the discount itself.

If the loan is being used to pay down credit cards, avoid immediately rebuilding those balances. If it is funding an emergency expense, start rebuilding a small cash reserve as soon as practical so the next repair or bill does not require another loan. The best outcome is not simply receiving funding. It is completing the repayment period with less financial strain and a stronger credit profile than when you started.

How we evaluated personal loans for bad credit

We evaluated MarketReview's verified Personal Loans inventory specifically for borrowers with weaker credit rather than reusing the overall Personal Loans ranking. Access mattered, but we did not reward a lender simply for marketing to bad-credit borrowers. We considered the APR range, origination-fee structure, minimum and maximum loan amounts, repayment flexibility, soft-pull rate checking, funding speed, state and income restrictions, and whether a borrower could use a joint or secured structure where appropriate.

We also distinguished lender-published eligibility facts from third-party estimates. Achieve publishes a 560 minimum credit score, so that threshold can be treated as a verified product fact. Where a lender does not publish a hard cutoff, we do not fill the gap with a competitor's estimated score and present it as MarketReview data. Approval always depends on the lender's underwriting and the applicant's full financial profile.

Our rankings are editorial and independent of compensation. Affiliate availability does not determine inclusion, ordering, ratings or Best For labels. Product terms were checked against current lender disclosures on September 6, 2026. Borrowers should review their personalized APR, fee, proceeds, payment and final loan agreement before accepting any offer.

Bad-credit personal loan questions

  • What credit score counts as bad credit for a personal loan?
There is no universal lender definition. Consumer education often groups lower FICO scores into fair or poor bands, but lenders use their own underwriting standards and may consider income, existing debts and credit history alongside the score. Treat score ranges as screening guides rather than approval rules.
  • Can I get a personal loan with a credit score below 580?
Possibly. Some lenders consider applicants across a broad credit spectrum, and Achieve currently publishes a 560 minimum score. Approval is never guaranteed, and a lower score can result in a higher APR, a larger fee or a smaller approved amount. Compare the actual offer with alternatives before borrowing.
  • Will checking personal-loan rates hurt my credit?
Many lenders let you check likely rates with a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score. If you proceed to a full application, the lender may perform a hard inquiry that can affect your score. Read the lender's current credit-check disclosure before moving beyond prequalification.
  • Is a secured personal loan better if I have bad credit?
It can improve access or pricing because collateral reduces the lender's risk, but it also puts the pledged asset at risk if you fail to repay. Compare the secured offer with unsecured alternatives and use collateral only when the cost improvement is meaningful and the payment is comfortably affordable.
  • How can I spot a bad-credit loan scam?
Be wary of guaranteed approval, requests to pay money upfront for the promise of a loan, pressure to send money by gift card or wire transfer, and lenders that will not clearly disclose the APR, fees and repayment schedule. Use the lender's official website and verify that it is authorized to lend in your state.
